Investigations And Mental Illness

Utilizing both personal and professional experiences, the staff of ISGU excel in dealing with all types of cases where one or more people involved have been diagnosed with or are thought to be inflicted with mental illness.  Mental illness  refers to one of many mental health conditions characterized by distress, impaired cognitive functioning, atypical behavior, emotional dysregulation, and/or maladaptive behavior.

Mental illnesses are medical conditions that disrupt a person’s thinking, feeling, mood, ability to relate to others, and daily functioning. Just as diabetes is a disorder of the pancreas, mental illnesses are medical conditions that often result in a diminished capacity for coping with the ordinary demands of life.

Cases where one or more parties may be mentally ill require a special understanding of the disorder, the symptoms, and what types of behaviors  the symptoms may induce.  Also needed in this type of work is the ability to understand and empathize with the families and others involved - their needs, their emotional states and the ability to help them receive information they may not have about mental illness and the services available to the person who is ill.

Additionally, with Privacy and HIPAA Laws, accessing an already muddy system becomes almost impossible when trying to locate a person who may be homeless or hospitalized.  Knowing what procedures are needed can mean the difference between hours and days compared to weeks and months in finding and recovery a lost, loved one.
